Screenings:
Mammogram: Since 1997, the ACS recommendation is that women aged 40 and over receive annual mammograms.

Clinical breast exam (CBE): Between the ages of 20 and 39, women should have an exam every three years. After age 40, women should have a breast exam by a health professional every year. The CBE should be done before or close to the mammogram.

Breast self-examination (BSE): All women aged 20 and over should do a BSE every month. Women and girls are encouraged to become familiar with their body in order to recognize changes.

Fast Facts:
The ACS estimates that in the United States, 40,580 women and 470 men will die in 2004 from breast cancer. In Indiana, the ACS estimates there will be 4,790 new cases of breast cancer in women and 890 women will die from breast cancer in 2004.

The Healthy People 2010 goal for breast cancer mortality is to reduce deaths to no more than 22.2 per 100,000 women (DHHS, 2000). Breast cancer mortality rates among African American women in Indiana is higher than the national rate.
