• One to two percent of lung cancer deaths are caused by air pollution.

• Smoking cessation decreases the risk of lung cancer to 30 to 50 percent of that of continuing smokers, after 10 years of abstinence.

The best way to prevent lung cancer is not to smoke tobacco and to avoid secondhand smoke exposure.

The Healthy People 2010 goal for lung cancer mortality is to reduce the death rate to no more than 44.9 per 100,000 population. In 1998 the lung cancer mortality rate was 57.6 per 100,000 population(DHHS, 2000).
