Early detection is crucial in the fight against cancer. The Cancer Control Section addresses early detection and other issues related to breast, cervical, testicular, prostate, lung, and colorectal cancer. |
| CANCER RISK ASSESSMENT: |
Interested individuals may participate in a cancer risk assessment by completing a simple questionnaire. Responses will be entered into a cancer risk analysis program by MCHD staff members and participants will receive a custom report detailing their specific risk for developing cancer. BREAST AND TESTICULAR SELF-EXAMS:
Partnerships are instrumental in carrying out the goals of the Cancer Control Section. Since 1995, thousands of high school students have learned about cervical and prostate cancer and been taught how to do Breast and Testicular Self-Exams (BSE and TSE). Each year senior nursing students from Indiana University, University of Indianapolis, and Marian College receive training from the MCHD Cancer Control Manager to teach this material. All high school students within the Indianapolis Public School District and some township and private schools receive this education as is mandated by Indiana law.
| COLORECTAL CANCER SCREENING: |
The Little Red Door Cancer Agency, the MCHD Cancer Control Section, and the MCHD Laboratory work together to distribute and test Hemoccult II take-home stool sample kits which are distributed at health fairs and other outreach events. These kits are used to help in early detection of colorectal cancer. |
