The Public's Watchful Eye

The Public Health Laboratory provides clinical, environmental microbiology and chemistry laboratory services to all Marion County Health Department programs and other local health agencies. The lab also analyzes specimens from private citizens.

As the public has become more concerned about environmental risks to thier health, Marion County's Public Health Laboratory has expanded its ability to detect and measure potential environmental hazards. The health department has also recognized that as science and technology improves, so does the ability to analyze and detect clinical health problems. This means that there will be more demand to use sampling, testing and other advanced methods to support public health protection efforts in the future.

The Marion County Health Department Public Health Laboratory operates 27 clinical laboratories (14 WIC clinic laboratories, four school-based clinical laboratories, six community-based care laboratories, two direct patient care laboratories and one reference laboratory) and two environmental laboratories (chemistry and microbiology) in Marion County.

The Public Health Laboratory operates under a Certificate for Environmental Water Testing (Bacteriology and Chemistry) from the Indiana State Department of Health, accreditation from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (Environmental Lead and Industrial Hygiene) and is certified by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act.
