Mother Baby Healthline - Social Services Department
The Mother Baby Healthline (MBHL) is a free, confidential information
and referral telephone service of the Marion County Health Department (MCHD).
This program is funded by a grant and was established in 1989 in response
to the community's effort to reduce the infant mortality rate in Indianapolis.
The MBHL evolved from using volunteers to using professional social workers
to answer the incoming calls. The MBHL is now staffed with two full time
social workers. Information about pregnancy, and infant/child health care
services is provided to callers at no charge. In addition, callers are linked
to other MCHD programs and community resources that provide assistance with
transportation, housing, finances, child care, and other related needs.
The biggest challenge for the MBHL lies in helping pregnant women and families
overcome the barriers that would prevent them from having a healthy pregnancy
and baby. Each call is screened according to the identified needs of the
caller and assessed to determine the appropriate direction of referral.
All callers are educated about available health care services and resources,
informed how to apply for services , and empowered to seek their own needed
assistance. The MBHL Social Worker plays a vital link in enhancing the health
of pregnant women and families in Marion County and reducing infant mortality.
The MBHL is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. Voice mail is
available during after hours for callers to leave a message. All persons
leaving a message receive a return phone call on the next business day.
MBHL services can be accessed by calling 221-BABY (2229). |
