Increases in humidity and temperatures predicted to reach into the 90’s could accelerate mosquito development with a possible adult hatch-off late next week. Compared to last year, the number of mosquitoes captured in health department traps is down 15 percent. So far, five positive pools of mosquitoes with the West Nile virus have been documented at four sites in Marion County. Local officials caution that it is likely mosquitoes carrying the virus are located throughout the county, even if it hasn’t been documented. No human cases of West Nile virus have confirmed in Marion County. Local health officials ask Marion County residents to help in mosquito control efforts. Residents can take a five-minute walk around their home, looking for any containers capable of holding water. Mosquitoes can lay eggs in a teaspoon of water, so even small containers create a potential breeding location. The containers should be cleaned, covered or put inside. The Marion County Health Department offers a variety of mosquito control services free of charge to county residents. These services include treating or eliminating potential breeding locations, free mosquito fish for ornamental ponds and nighttime spraying. Call the health department at 221-7440 for more information. |
