Mosquitoes with West Nile Virus Continues to Increase

The Marion County Health Department has documented 24 sites testing positive for mosquitoes with the West Nile virus. To date, 52 groups of mosquitoes testing positive for the West Nile virus have been taken from the 24 sites. Local health officials say this has been a fairly normal mosquito season so far.

No human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Marion County.

    Marion County residents are encouraged to take a five-minute walk around their home to check for any containers capable of holding water. Health officials have found mosquito eggs in a teaspoon of water inside a discarded Styrofoam coffee cup.

    The Marion County Health Department offers free educational materials, free mosquito fish and other services through its Mosquito Control program. Anyone with questions concerning mosquitoes can contact the health department at 221-7440.
