The goals of tobacco control efforts in Indianapolis are:  to reduce initiation of smoking by youth; to assist current smokers, especially pregnant women, who wish to quit smoking; and to protect the public from the toxic effects of secondhand smoke.

The following organizations are key partners who have helped to develop the Marion County plan and will be responsible for specific activities.


Alliance for Health Promotion

Neighborhood advocacy training for youth and adults to engage them in promoting smoke-free restaurants, campuses, and workplaces, and compliance with youth access laws.

Overall goal: To increase smoke-free school campuses, worksites, and other public places where families congregate.


Indiana University Nicotine Dependence Program

Smoking cessation training for medical providers to increase their ability to assess how ready and able their patients are to quit smoking and then to assist these patients to quit.

Overall goal: To increase the numbers of smokers who are referred to a smoking cessation program.


HealthNet, Wishard/IUMG, St. Francis Primary Care Center, Shalom Health Center, Raphael Health Center, and Citizen's Health Center

Group and individual smoking cessation counseling for individuals and adults.

Overall goal: To increase quit attempts by people who smoke and to reduce smoking by pregnant women and adults.


YMCA Urban Mission Branch

Mini-grants to promote youth tobacco resistance and advocacy projects in after-school programs. This program provides the Teens Against Tobacco Use Leadership Camp in which teams from schools and after-school programs are invited to participate in a two-day camp designed to develop their leadership and presentation skills related to tobacco resistance.

Overall goal: To reduce initiation of tobacco use among young adolescents and decrease proportion of children regularly exposed to tobacco smoke at home.


IPS and Perry Township Schools

School-based curriculum (LifeSkills Training) for use in 18 middle schools to engage students in drug-resistance learning and skills development.

Overall goal: To reduce initiation of tobacco use among young adolescents.


Reach for Youth, Inc.

Tobacco Awareness Program (TAP) and Tobacco Education Group (TEG) are education and cessation services for high school youth.

Overall goal: To increase smoking cessation attempts by adolescent smokers and reduce smoking rates among high school students.


Ruth Lilly Health Education Center

Experiential field trips for middle school students augmenting LifeSkills Training.

Overall goal: To reduce initiation of tobacco use among young adolescents.
