HERBICIDE SAMPLING PROGRAM
In 1995, MCHD started an herbicide monitoring program for Eagle Creek, Fall Creek and White River to evaluate the level of herbicides in Marion County source water. This was begun, in part, as a result of the report, “Tap Water Blues: Herbicides in Drinking Water”, a publication of The Environmental Working Group and the Physicians for Social Responsibility. The purpose and goal of the MCHD project has changed dramatically since that time. In 1998, sampling of White River was stopped, except for the Canal at Burdsal Parkway, because of the almost non-existent levels detected. Likewise in 1998, additional sites were added on Eagle Creek. Fall Creek/Geist Reservoir sites have been reduced to one near the water company intake at Keystone Avenue. Sites on Eagle Creek have been maintained primarily to support the activities of the Eagle Creek Reservoir Watershed Task Force. The ultimate goal of this group is source water protection. IDEM has recognized the accomplishments of the Eagle Creek group and has continued to award grants to support their work.
